If you ask about special fares, room rates and other deals, you likely will find it possible to make a trip for two-thirds or less what it would have cost a few months ago. This can be particularly important for small businesses, for which travel expenses can be a major item.
– Emptier planes: Having flown the Pacific a couple of dozen times and the Atlantic several, I can tell you that spending 10 to 15 hours on a 747 carrying 100 people is a far more pleasant than flying a full plane.
Lately, a lot of 747s have been carrying very light loads on international routes. Airlines have been canceling some flights in hopes of filling the remaining flights, but they haven’t always been successful. The airlines’ misfortune can be your good luck in the following ways:
- On a lightly loaded plane, you can be as comfortable in economy class as in executive or first class. It is frequently possible, especially toward the rear of the plane, to commandeer an entire row of seats in the four-abreast center section, fold the armrests up and make yourself a bed.
- Another alternative is to sit behind an unoccupied seat and push the back of the seat in front of you all the way forward, which creates a degree of roominess that is similar to business class.
- If you like to work on long flights, light loads mean you can find the space in economy to spread out your papers, fire up your computer and get on with it.
- Less crowded airplanes also make it a lot easier to walk laps in the cabin. I always feel stiff and miserable at the end of a long flight if I fail to move around. I make it a practice to walk completely around the cabin at least six or eight times, and this is a lot easier to accomplish on a lightly loaded plane.
– Battery-run devices: Increased airport security means closer scrutiny of anything that runs on batteries such as Asus Z99H Battery.
As a reporter, I routinely carry battery-powered devices – such as a laptop computer, camera, calculator, Walkman and small flashlight.
I always pack them in my carry-on luggage, which is usually my computer bag. That way, they’re all available for security people, who may well ask that you demonstrate that they all work. The more suspicious may ask that you remove the battery that powers laptop computers; be sure you know how to do it.
