USB Extender: Extend USB peripherals from the host computer
One to four USB peripheral devices can be placed away from the host computer using the USB Extender. Basic extenders allow users the benefits of USB technology beyond the desktop, extending the computer keyboard, mouse and any USB device up to 150 feet away from the location of the PC. Connections between the remote unit and the local unit are secured via Cat5/Cat5e cables. Another milestone in this USB technology is the extension of these peripherals over distances up to 10kms over fiber optic cables. Investment in existing hardware can be maintained and the same peripherals can be placed away from the host computer thereby providing economical means of long range transmission.
Also known as USB peripheral extenders, this is purely a hardware device with no requirement for additional software for either the host computer or for the peripheral devices. These extenders are fully compatible with most USB devices and they support typical plug and play specifications. Cross platform flexibility which is a benefit of using USB, is also available in these units. Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Mac-OS, Linux and Sun are also supported by them. These extenders are compliant with USB 1.1 specifications.
USB 2.0 Extender is the latest version of these extenders. It allows any high-speed USB peripheral device to be connected up to 150 feet from the computer and operating at the same high-speed USB 2.0 data transfer rate. Various types of these extenders are available such as USB 2.0 fiber optic extender and a wireless USB 2.0 extender. A key feature of the latter is the avoidance of cables, eliminating the clutter associated with them. They come in either 1 port or 4 port models. Another format of these extenders is the USB KVM Extenders which can be used to extend distances between KVM switches, user consoles, and connected computers.
